The last sail of the season is more enjoyable when you already have a plan for what comes next. For sailors around Cincinnati, Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana, fall is the time to arrange retrieval, inspect the boat and get ready for winter storage.

Whether you own a small daysailer or a larger trailerable sailboat, this checklist will help you organize the work—and remember the repairs you’ll want finished before spring.

1. Make your haul-out and storage plan

Start with the practical details: where the boat will come out, how it will travel and where it will spend the winter.

Confirm your marina or club’s seasonal arrangements and check current launch conditions before setting a retrieval date. If you sail at Cowan Lake, review our dam rehabilitation and access updates and contact your club or marina about plans that affect your boat.

When contacting a service provider or storage yard, have these details ready:

  • Boat make, model and length
  • Current location
  • Trailer or cradle information
  • Mast-handling and transportation needs
  • Preferred dates and any known repairs

Strictly Sail & Kayak maintains a sailboat storage yard in Fairfield, Ohio. Visit our storage page for details, and contact the store to confirm space, suitability and current arrangements before bringing your boat.

2. Inspect the trailer before retrieval day

Check tires, wheel bearings, lights, the coupler, safety chains, winch strap and boat supports. Arrange repairs before towing. Confirm that the trailer and tow vehicle are suitable for the boat’s loaded weight.

3. Put sails and rigging away thoughtfully

Remove sails, let them dry completely and inspect them before storage. Look for damaged stitching, chafe and worn fittings.

Photograph and label rigging as you dismantle it. Inspect lines, shrouds, terminals and mast hardware, and record anything that needs professional attention. Plan mast handling around your boat’s instructions and the storage facility’s requirements.

4. Protect the systems your boat actually has

Winter preparation varies considerably between a simple daysailer and a boat with an engine, plumbing and electrical systems.

Follow the relevant manufacturer’s winter-storage procedures for the engine, fuel system, batteries and any onboard water systems. Battery requirements differ by type. Have a qualified technician handle procedures you’re unfamiliar with.

5. Check drainage, covers and the boat throughout winter

Clear drains, remove moisture-holding gear and use a properly supported, ventilated cover. Arrange periodic checks, especially after storms. Have yard personnel address any concerns with the boat’s supports.

For additional preparation guidance, see the BoatUS winterizing guide.

6. Turn this season’s annoyances into a repair list

Was a halyard difficult to raise? Did a hatch leak? Did you notice worn line, damaged gelcoat or hardware that wasn’t working smoothly?

Write it down now while the details are fresh. Include photos and note when the problem occurred. That makes it easier to discuss the work and request an estimate.

Our sailboat service page outlines work including fiberglass repairs, bottom painting, rigging, line splicing and hardware installation. Contact us to discuss your boat’s needs and scheduling.

Plan now for an easier spring

A clear fall plan gives you time to organize storage, address repairs and keep track of what needs attention before launching again.
